Film Schedule:

December 11
Blame it on Fidel
Julie Gavras, 100 minutes, France, 2006
Caught up in the political revolution sweeping France in the early 1970s, Fernando and Marie reject the comforts of their bourgeois life and dedicate themselves full time to radical activism. This comes as a shock to their precocious nine year-old daughter Anna, who struggles to understand her parents' newfound ideals. Brilliantly told from Anna's perspective, this critically acclaimed film captures the coming-of-age moment when children realize the contradictions of adulthood and have to make their own choices.

January 15
Alexandra
Alexander Sokurov, 92 minutes, Russia, 2007
One of the most critically acclaimed films of 2008, director Alexandar Sokurov (Russian Ark) brings to the screen a film of startling originality and beauty, featuring a performance of monumental depth by opera legend Galina Vishnevskay, the widow of the cellist and conductor Mistislav Rostropovich. The story follows Alexandra on her journey to find her grandson on the front lines in Chechnya, and in the director's own words revels "the eternal life of Russia."

February 12
4 Months 3 Weeks 2 Days
Christian Mingiu, Romania, 113 minutes, Romania, 2007
During the final days of communism in Romania, two college roommates Otilia and Gabita are busy preparing for a night away. But rather than planning for a holiday, they are making arrangements for Gabita's illegal abortion and unwittingly, both find themselves burrowing deep down a rabbit hole of unexpected revelations.

March 12
Border Café (Café Transit)
Kambozia Partovi, 67 minutes, Iran, 2005
An independently minded Iranian widow and mother flouts tradition by re-opening her late husband's Europe/Asia border café in this socially-oriented drama. Isolated from her friends and neighbors for her headstrong efforts to get the business back on her feet, Reyhan also faces pressure from her conservative brother-in-law who longs to take her as his second wife as permitted by custom. But Reyhan's culinary skills present a roadblock for Nasser, and an unusual turn of events.

April 16, 2008
Still Life
Zhang Ke Jia, 108 minutes, China, 2006
This poignant human drama is set against a surreal, metaphorically loaded backdrop-a Yangtze town that will soon be submerged by the Three Gorges Dam. Like the director's other films it's an empathetic portrait of those left behind by a modernizing society, and a unique hybrid of documentary and fiction.
