The unforgettable visual puzzles and impossible structures of the Dutch artist Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) have earned Escher worldwide acclaim. Printer, draftsman, and book illustrator Escher remains one of the most famous artists of the 20th century, and his graphic works are unforgettable. This retrospective exhibition was one of the most comprehensive and important exhibitions of Escher's work ever assembled in the United States. It presented more than 300 rare original artworks dating from 1919-1969 - from his earliest student drawings to the last work completed in 1969. Rare drawings and watercolors illustrated Escher's working ideas and observations, while many famous prints were accompanied by their original preparatory drawings never before exhibited.
Together, these artworks attest to the full range of Escher's genius. Included were key examples of his most famous works illustrating his explorations in both the real world around him and the magical world of his imagination. All artworks, including Escher's studio furniture and memorabilia, were acquired directly from the M.C. Escher Family Collection, previously on loan to the Hague Museum.
This exhibition was organized by the Boca Raton Museum of Art in conjunction with Rock J. Walker/Walker Fine Art, with generous funding provided by Marc Bell.
