Artists Theresa Bernstein (b. 1890 Kraków, Poland; d. 2002 New York, NY) and William Meyerowitz (b. 1887 Ekaterinoslav, Ukraine; d. 1981 New York, NY) married in 1919 and created work side-by-side until Meyerowitz's death in 1981. While their careers spanned over 70 years' worth of art movements, the pair were best known for their figurative works portraying vignettes of daily life, similar to the Ashcan School popularized by their friends George Bellows, Robert Henri, George Luks, and John Sloan.
This exhibition, of over 50 works on paper and paintings, the majority given by local collector Edith Stein, captures a timeline of modern life set in the burgeoning art scenes of New York and Gloucester, Massachusetts, where the couple kept a summer home.
The museum's collection highlights a charming depiction of the seaside artist colony in Gloucester, loving portraits the couple made of one another, daily street scenes, and will be supplemented by artworks by their fellow artists that traveled in their circles, such as George Bellows, Robert Henri, and John Sloan.
