The Boca Raton Museum of Art is pleased to be the temporary home for three prototypes by the internationally acclaimed artist Vik Muniz. These works are being produced as multiples by BravinLee Editions.

Puck 1 is a self-portrait of the artist as the supernatural trickster from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It is the first in a planned series of marble sculptures of actors dressed for their roles as some of the Bard’s most unforgettable characters. Professional theater make-up artists prepared Muniz for a complex 360-degree photo-shoot of hundreds of images. These photographs were then digitally prepared for use by a robotic machine that created the bust. It was carved from marble quarried in Carrara, Italy, an exquisite material that has been favored by sculptors since antiquity.

Muniz has also created editions of his enlargements of the vintage Matchbox cars that speak to childhood memories and popular culture. Produced by British toymaker Lesney Products beginning in the 1950s, these miniature cars and trucks came with their own matchbook size box and are now valued by collectors including Muniz himself. Instead of a brand new toy, his versions show the wear and tear of play, including missing paint and carefully reproduced distressed cardboard.
