General Responsibilities

The Security Officer’s overall duty is to monitor and safeguard the Museum's artwork, property, employees and visitors. Concurrent with ensuring a safe environment this position provides excellent internal and external customer service to visitors, and staff and other personnel.


Specific Responsibilities

  • Monitors video surveillance for any unusual activity, disruptions or unlawful activities
  • Performs regular interior and exterior foot patrols of the facility to ensure the environment is safe and secure and to discourage, unwanted or criminal behavior
  • Patrols the exterior grounds at scheduled and other times as needed
  • Patrols galleries at scheduled times and other times as needed;determines which floor has more visitors and focuses attention to those galleries
  • Controls the entrance and departure of employees, visitors and vehicles according to Daily Security Procedures and Protocols 
  • Meets and gives access to scheduled visitors who arrive at the Museum entrance before public hours and/or on days when the Museum is closed to the public  
  •  Is aware of items prohibited in the galleries (i.e. food, drink, backpacks) and directs visitors to the Visitor Services area for storage of these items
  • Prevents visitors from touching or handling artwork, sitting or leaning on platforms, pedestals, artwork, or plexi-glass covers 
  • Utilizes good judgement in evolving situations, always with a customer-focused mindset
  • Observers artwork and galleries in areas of responsibility for condition changes of any kind and promptly reports damages, and potentially harmful conditions (water leaks, condensation, etc.) to Facilities Maintenance 
  • Responds to emergency calls for assistance, provides first aid supplies and records details of visitor incidents on the Incident/Accident Report Form for the guest
  • Responds and investigate to all sounding alarms and uses the PA system to make necessary emergency public announcements; uses communication devices such PA system and two way radios in a clear and concise manner
  • Remains vigilant; constantly observes the work environment to ensure safety and compliance
  • At closing, verifies that no one is in the building; checks and locks all doors (interior and exterior), lowers the lobby gates and activates the alarm 
  • Is familiar and keeps current with the content of the Museum’s Emergency Disaster Plan and is prepared to deal with emergency situations 
  • Adheres to the Employee Handbook, safety and other organizational policies and participates in day-to-day decision making within these established policies and security procedures
  • Acts in a lawful manner while in defense of the Museum facility, staff and area of responsibility
  • Represents the Museum and strives to consistently provide excellent customer service to visitors, members and staff, handling the problems quickly, efficiently, and professionally
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings 
  • Other duties as assigned


Part Time Weekends- 


  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • High School Diploma; Associates or Bachelors Degree in related field preferred
  • Some training in security and/or safety is preferred
  • Working knowledge of integrated security and fire systems
  • Ability to quickly and clearly relay information and directions in high pressure situations
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, problem solving, and  conflict resolution skills
  • Excellent customer and visitor service skills
  • Self-motivated professional with an ability to work effectively with a variety of personalities and maintain friendly and courteous relationships 
  • First-Aid and CPR certified

  • Stands and walks throughout the work day, including sitting and bending; reaches, lifts, carries, manipulates various materials, supplies and equipment; arranges furniture; climb ladders
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoor
  • Lifting/Carrying/Pushing/Pulling: The ability to lift and carry weights that may exceed 20 pounds
  • Must be able to adapt and perform job requirements under stressful and time-sensitive conditions
  • Must be able to respond quickly when unforeseen changes occur
  • Must be able to function independently and productively and utilize time wisely
  • Must be in good general health 
  • Work requires continuous activity and with frequent interruptions
  •  Flexible schedule including weekends, some holidays and special events
