About the Artist
Roy Lichtenstein was born in New York City in 1923. His mother, a trained pianist, took advantage of the numerous cultural offerings and exposed Roy and his sister to concerts, lectures, and museums. He frequently visited the Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Modern Art. Roy showed a creative ability at an early age, playing clarinet and piano as well as drawing, painting, and sculpting.
After graduating high school in 1940, he studied painting and drawing at the Art Students League of New York with Reginald Marsh. His studies at Ohio State University were interrupted by WWII when he was drafted in 1943 and deployed to Europe. He did return to OSU and ultimately completed his BFA and MFA.
Along with Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, James Rosenquist and others, Lichtenstein became a leading figure in the Pop Art movement in the late 1950s and 60s. Pop Art challenged the concepts of “high art” and focused on popular and commercial culture. These artists celebrated everyday life while observing banality and disillusionment.
Lichtenstein's painting method in the 1960s, which often involved the use of stencils, sought to bring the look and feel of commercial printing processes to his work. Through the use of primary colors, thick outlines, and Benday dots, Lichtenstein endeavored to make his works appear machine-made
