Sheila Pree Bright, Liesa Cole, Hank Willis Thomas
From the Collection of Doug McCraw

This exhibition includes works by three artists, all from the collection of Doug McCraw. Sheila Pree Bright’s series titled Young Americans consists of monumental chromogenic photographs of young people aged 18 to 25 who were born between 1982 and 2000. In 2006, the date of the series, Bright’s subjects were either U.S. Citizens or immigrants pursuing citizenship. She posed them with an American flag and included statements revealing each subject’s view of American culture and society.

Liesa Cole’s contribution to the exhibition is The Secret Repository-A Journey of Liberation, an interactive installation of photographs, neon, video projections, and audio that reveals the secrets kept by the subjects of her work. Cole seeks to create a safe space where the viewer can anonymously unburden themselves of what they have kept hidden from the world.

Hank Willis Thomas’ photographic series Unbranded explores consumer culture as it relates to African Americans and how advertising reinforces stereotypes.
